Kampman To Eagles?

Defensive End Kampman an Eagle?
By Lance Epstein

A source has told Chicago Sun Times reporter Sean Jensen that defensive end Aaron Kampman might be flying to the Eagles Nest. Kampman, if healthy, would finally give the Eagles a pass rusher to go with Trent Cole.

The soon to be former Packer, is thought of as the second best or third best defensive end on the market; behind only Julius Peppers and according to some scouts Kyle Vanden Bosch.

Before this past season, Kampman registered 37 over the past three season; an average of 12.3 sacks a season. However this season was a down year for him as the Packers switched to a 3-4 defense and tore his ACL midway through the NFL season.

His injury is a major concern because it was late in the season and there is no time table on his return. Furthermore, he is a 30 year old pass rusher coming off a ACL injury. On top of that, he has not had a double digit sack total since 2007 (although he had 9.5 sacks in 2008). The Eagles must be careful not to throw a ton of money at him like they did with Stacy Andrews. They cannot afford another backfire in free agency.

All that said, Kampman is perfectly suited to play in a 4-3 and will take some of the pressure off Cole. Without the injury Kampman might have gotten close to the money Peppers is going to get.

This could be a get bargain for the Eagles since everyone going after Peppers, the Eagles might sneak in and get Kampman. The Eagles may chose to go straight after Kampman once free agency starts because once Peppers is signed, he becomes more sought after (Since he and Vanden Bosch would be the only real impact unrestricted free agent defensive ends on the market).

There is no doubt he Eagles will be on the phones at 12:01 am so stay tuned.

Other news:

According to Philly.com FB Leonard Weaver and the Eagles were close to a new deal. Now they have just tendered him with a second round pick.

Also keep your eyes on O.J. Atogwe and the Eagles. The Rams only tendered the restricted free agent with "right to refusal" tender. This means no teams will have to give up picks if he signs with them and the Rams do not match the offer. The Eagles want and need a veteran free safety and Atogwe is a playmaker when he is healthy.
