Two-Time Pro Bowler Andrews Released
By Lance Epstein
The Eagles have decided to release offensive lineman Shawn Andrews who has not played since week two of the 2008 season with back surgeries and fighting a battle with depression. Some believe his battle with depression was on of the major reasons the Eagles signed his brother, Stacy Andrews, in free agency in 2009.
Andy Reid felt that it was time for the Eagles to move away from Andrews (possibly find his replacement in this draft with Mike Iupati), but appreciated his contributions as an Eagle.
"We appreciate the efforts and contributions of Shawn while he was in Philadelphia," said head coach Andy Reid. "We have, however, decided to move in another direction."
The release of the once heralded offensive linemen was expected do to rumors swirling about Andrews ability to come back to form and if he truly had the passion to play football anymore.
Andrews was a former first round 2004 draft pick of the Eagles. The Eagles had high hopes for Andrews being their starting right tackle in 2009, but his back flared up in conditioning drills and he never saw the field again as an Eagle.
The rehabbing Andrews posted two comments on his release from the Eagles with "Bye, bye birds..." and "ANDY REID!!! Respekt!!!!!!!".
Unfortunately for the Eagles, the release of Shawn leaves the offensive line in more shambles. Center Jamal Jackson is most likely out until mid-season with a ACL tear, his brother has yet to show his knee can endure a full 16 game schedule and Winston Justice's play declined after receiving a contract extension.
Furthermore, I would not be surprised if the Dallas Cowboys take the gamble on Andrews to help sure up their line. If healthy, Andrews was one of the best offensive linemen in the NFL and drastically upgrades their line.
