New DE Speaks On Being An Eagle
By Lance Epstein
While most Eagles fans waited three hours in anticipation for a selection and were hoping players like offensive tackle Bruce Campbell or USC defensive end Everson Griffin or even a cornerback that fell dramatically. Although the Eagles provided a bit of a curveball by selecting defensive end Daniel Te'o-Nesheim.
The 6-foot-3, 263-pound defensive end started all four years at the University of Washington. Over the past three seasons, he recorded at least eight sacks in each of the seasons and finished with 27 sacks and 191 tackles over his career. However, he is projected to be a rotational end and a special teams contributor at the next level.
Before the combine, Te'o-Nesheim was projected to be a fifth-round pick, but his stellar workouts moved him up the draft boards. At the combine he posted a 37 inches, ran a 6.91 second three-cone drill (second best of any defensive end) and a 4.18 seconds 20-yard shuttle run (third-best of any defensive lineman).
After his impressive combine, many scouts moved him up all the way to the beginning of the third-round. For fans, they will question if he truly was the best available player on the Eagles draft boards with such good value still on the board.
While Te'o-Nesheim might wind up to be a very solid player, this pick screams Trevor Laws and Bryan Smith. Both who are considered to be draft busts by the Philadelphia Eagles.
Here are some of his conference call quotes:
Whether he knew if the Eagles would take him:
"My agent said something about I might go to Philly and that excited me, but I wasn't trying to really read into what other people were saying."
On whether he will play defensive end or linebacker with the Eagles:
"No idea. I'd just be happy to play wherever they want me to."
On Coming to Philadelphia for a workout:
"A interview. About two weeks ago."
On position they told him:
I think d-line, but I don't care where. Wherever they want me to go."
Expect to go this high:
I didn't really think about where I might go. I would just be happy to go. Honestly"
On Watching the draft:
"I wasn't watching until I got the call. I was just laying down looking at the ceiling. "
On his last names pronunciation:
"Te'o is my mom's last name and Nesheim is my dad's last name."
On playing in Philadelphia with the rabid fans:
"I love how rabid the fans are and I love watching their defense play. We watched a lot of their defensive line when I came on my visit and it was just really really exciting to see how hard they play. Even when I talked to Washington (defensive coordinator) Coach (Nick) Holt about it, he said that they are a great defense to play for and I would love to go there. That's what I was thinking as soon as I watched that film."
On the type of player he is:
"I think I am tough and definitely durable. I think of myself as a high-effort guy and I'll do whatever is asked on or off the field."
On if he played linebacker in college:
"A couple of snaps. But I have dropped into coverage in our defense. So I have no qualms going where they ask me to go."
