Eagles Sign Multiple Undrafted Rookies
By Lance Epstein
On Monday morning the Philadelphia Eagles are expected to release of the names of the undrafted rookie free agents that they acquired hoursafter the draft.
A pair of names that were leaked were a pair of Purdue Boilermakers. According to the Courier-Press located in Evansville, Ill., cornerback David Penders and quarterback Joey Elliott have signed with the club.
Elliott went undrafted because he does not possess the ideal size for the quarterback position at 6-foot-2 215-pounds or the arm to be a starting caliber or even a capable backup.
As for Penders, he was a three-year starter with the Boilermakers. He possesses great size being 6-foot with long arms, but is very lean and lacks great speed. However, he has good athleticism, foot quickness and agility, but will struggle in man coverage.
Still, secondary coach Dick Juaron might be able to work his magic and turn him into a nice nickel cornerback since he has fluid hips and has shown some adequate range.
As reported yesterday on Eaglesmix.com, the Eagles also signed Tennessee-Chattanooga wide receiver Blue Cooper. Some of the other rumored players to have signed with the Eagles are West Texas A&M running back Keith Flemming, Massachusetts fullback Chris Zardas, Colgate wide receiver Pat Simonds, San Jose State wide out Kevin Jurovich and LSU defensive tackle Charles Alexander.
Of all the players that could stick on the roster, the most likely is Penders because the Eagles are thin at cornerback position. Over the years, the Eagles have found some nice gems in the secondary in the undrafted market with Quintin Mikell, Joselio Hanson and Dimitiri Patterson.
Some other notable players that were former undrafted rookies that are currently on the Eagles roster are Jamaal Jackson, Akeem Jordan, Juqua Parker, Nick Cole, David Akers, Antonio Dixon, Hank Baskett, Mikell, Hanson and Patterson. So do not be surprise if one of these players sticks and plays a significant role with the team.
