Eagle Down....Mikell Gets Hit By Injury Bug

SS Mikell Tweaks His Knee
By Lance Epstein

With the Eagles already thin at the safety position, they took a potential devastating hit today. Starting strong safety Quintin Mikell limped off the practice field with a "tweaked" knee according to the Eagles.

Like the injury to defensive back Marlin Jackson [ruptured Achilles tendon], the incident took place in the indoor practice facility due to the rainfall in Philadelphia. Unlike Jackson, the Eagles have not released the severity of the injury or any news besides that he tweaked his knee. However, he was seen walking with a noticeable limp after he got hurt.

This injury could be catastrophic because Mikell is the only safety on the squad with significant experience at the position. If Mikell's injury is more then just a tweak and he is not able to go this season [not likely] then the Eagles could be looking at Nate Allen at free safety and either Quintin Demps, Kurt Coleman or possibly Macho Harris at strong side.

On the other hand, if Mikell's injury is far worse then reported, the team could make a strong push on free agent safety Ohsiomogho Atogwe. Atowge is only 29 years old and has been a playmaker on a bad St. Louis Rams team. Furthermore, he has not been swooped up yet since he became a free agent on June 1, so his price tag keeps falling as the days pass by.

Another player the Eagles could look at is Shawn Springs. Springs played safety last year for the Patriots. Additionally, he can play cornerback as well and could possibly be signed for the league's veteran minimum.

Either way, it is just another day of Eagles OTAs with another Eagle down. Fans might have a suggestion for head coach Andy Reid...lighten up on the drills it is only practice.

  1. What is the coaching staff thinking?..Damn!..If it happens to rain on any giving day, Take the team indoors and watch some much needed films or just get the guy's on the same page. No need to let your potential starting squad practice football on a concrete surface with a thin layer of turf on top of it...My god, what are you brain-stormers thinking!!!!
