Early Bird Specials
By Lance Epstein
With veterans expected to be arriving at different times throughout the day to make the 7 p.m. team meeting, the two flashiest players on the roster decided to get to work early at Leigh University.
Both Asante Samuel and DeSean Jackson missed the Eagles’ final OTA practice. Some may think they were trying to make amends by showing up bright and early to training camp today. Or it could be that they had to run sprints as punishment for the no-show. However it turns out to be neither.
To most this is extremely surprising since Jackson has been asking for a new contract and has come up with nothing. Additionally, Samuel has seemed to be disgruntled with the front office (Andy Reid in particular) for calling out his lack of tackling.
However it shouldn't come as a shock considering each player had to finish the mandatory conditioning drills that the rest of the Eagles roster had to pass back in June. A team sources says that Jackson and Samuel passed with flying colors and should be able to participate in the first full team practice, which is on Friday.
Besides Jackson and Samuel already getting into training camp mode, other players such as tight end Brent Celek and his twitter buddy middle linebacker Stewart Bradley have also already reported to be on site at Bethlehem.
Still, Jackson and Samuel being early birds sends a strong message to their teammates that they are not going to let outside distractions get to them or affect their game. This is a great sign for a team needing leaders to emerge on both sides of the ball.
As the day continues more and more Eagles will arrive and will meet the press. Look for more quotes from them later in the day.
