WR Maclin Goes Down With Hyperextended Knee
By Lance Epstein
It is just another day on the practice field at Eagles training camp at Leigh with another injury to a starter. On the first day of full contact drills, the Eagles saw their star wide receiver DeSean Jackson go down with back spasms. Today, the Eagles held their collective breathes as their other starting wide receiver fell to the turf with an apparent knee injury.
According to the team, Jeremy Maclin suffered a hyperextended knee during the afternoon practice and was carted to the trainer's room. Maclin went to the turf, clutched his knee until trainers came over and made him extend the knee.
After head coach Andy Reid observed the significance of the injury (and his entire starting wide receiver duo on the sidelines), he cancelled the rest of practice. Probably the smart move since it feels like former Eagles quarterback Donovan McNabb is doing some voodoo magic on his former teammates.
However it should be noted that Eagles trainers are still evaluating Maclin, so the seriousness of the injury could be much worse than the original report.
Still the Eagles have seen far too many injuries for their liking being only eight days into camp. Jackson, Maclin, Mike Bell and Brent Celek have all left practice for various injuries on the offensive side of the ball. On top of that Jamaal Jackson, Andrews and Todd Herremans have not even seen the practice field.
This means six of the 11 starters on offense have missed practice at Bethlehem. While it is just a week into camp, this could stunt the Eagles continuity on offense. Now is the time to get on the same page so they can start the season with a bang. Additionally, with Kevin Kolb not being seasoned veteran he needs all the reps he can get with his young core.
Each day it seems like the Eagles lose another key cog on their team. These injuries are not major, but it is hard to imagine if they keep continuing to lose starters at this rate that the team will be gelled by week one.
Others held out of the afternoon practice were DeSean Jackson, Macho Harris, Asante Samuel, Antonio Dixon, Nick Cole, Stacy Andrews and Jordan Norwood.
