Christmas In July

By Terrell Whitby

Joy is the feeling of grinning inside.” When your eyes meet the first tweet, or your ears first heard the most stunning announcement in Philadelphia since Viagra went on sale, Wilson Goode ordered a bombing in a residential neighborhood or the Phillies had signed Cliff Lee, if you are or were a lover of football than internally you had the greatest grin since you realized the illegitimate reason for Christmas. The answer too many Philadelphia football prayers were delivered in a press conference in a small Pennsylvania town called Bethlehem. The Philadelphia Eagles known to most Cowboys fans as the team that has never won a Super Bowl signed Nnamdi Asomugha. So Let it be written, so let it be done. There will be time to analyze the ramifications of this bold move in the upcoming days. For now we must only exhale at this stunning revelation from Andy, Howie, Jeffery and Joe As a side note the Eagles in addition signed Vince Young, Johnnie Lee Higgins, Jason Babin and Donald Lee. Who said Rome was not built in a day? The only thing passed the feeling of surprise is that Philadelphia is once again the benefactor of the spurning of Dallas and New York. It is in the sports realm no longer the bastardized step child of the city that never sleeps. As for proof: the Phillies just got Hunter Pence!!

This will go down as one of the greatest days in Philadelphia sports talk radio and sports history. There can be no more Cataldi pre dawn cries, no more excuses in Bird land, no more caviling of Coach Reid and the Eagles’ Front Office. It is simple a beautiful moment in time. This is a chance to exorcise the decades of losing, Bramanian frugality and the January 19, 2002 football debacle at the Vet. This one move coupled with the acquisition of Dominic Rodgers Cromartie allows every card carrying member of Eagle Nation to believe that a Super Bowl victory is within their grasp. The 51 year crusade lead by football crazed Great Grand Fathers and their sons, farmers, flower vendors, pharmacists, home makers, street cleaners, barbers, factory workers and et al in the town unfortunately known for booing and smacking a dirty and drunken Santa with snowballs. This is the bliss of being a sports fan; it is an imaginary balm for the wounds of your world. A mental deep breath from the toils of adulthood and its omnipresent responsibilities. Nnamdi Asomugha is now a member of the Birds. The game is not played on paper nor will the Lombardi Trophy be given to the winner of the Free Agency period. This move only affords 16 Sundays of pure excitement, 16 times to beat and exude our chest with Civic Pride. This move allows us to craft celebratory songs, to know victory more than we know defeat and to have three hours of uninterrupted football pleasure. In ancient times there were odes written and paintings dedicated to brave and savage warriors who brought honor to their homeland by vanquishing an inferior opponent. Two years ago Philadelphia’s football team lost a great defensive mind and man to Cancer. Jim Johnson was vanquished by an unconquerable opponent; this is an ode to his former colleagues at the Nova Care who skillfully remade the defense that he made famous.

Today a football team in Philadelphia became complete. It is a team that is replete with speed in all areas, dynamic playmakers at most positions and a cadre of experience and know how on its sidelines. The time is now for this team to work hard on and off the field. Today men who are traditionally ridiculed and tormented by false know-it-alls must be given their just praise and props. Today for 60 million dollars over 5 years a town was redeemed and the greatest non championship sports day was birthed. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts. E-A-G-L-E-S
